T he territory of the Argentina of almost 2,800,000 square kilometers occupies the eighth place in the world, with a mixed climate and amazing natural areas, many of them protected by National Parks and / or Provincial Reserves.The Argentine Patagonia occupies 47% of this territory.Our research begun in Punta Norte, Península Valdés, Province of the Chubut, Patagonia Argentina. This península has a surface of 3,625 square kilometers and it is one of the most important animals reserve of the world. Besides the various terrestrial fauna and 160 species of birds, in their coasts exists different breeding colonies of sea lions -Otaria flavescens-, with a population that exceedes 10,000 individuals, and an important elephant seals -Mirounga leonina- reproduction colony, with a population wich is calculated more than 42,000 individuals. Every years, the southern right whales -Eubalaena australis- reproduce in the Nuevo and San José gulfs. Approximately 500-600 individuals reach there from may to december. Different dolphin species and an important marine
life make of this place a magnificent observation and research zone, which is protected by
a provincial law and take care by rangers (guardafaunas). |
