The Prefectura Naval Argentina have now two official corps specialized in rescue of stranded cetaceans. The first one has its base in Puerto Madryn, where in the coasts of the Nuevo and San Jose's several strandings are registered of Southern Right whales and another species of small cetaceans. The second official corps is placed in the city of San Antonio Oeste, in the Province of Río Negro. Both groups were trained with that objective by Mr. Juan Carlos López, General Coordinator of the Cetacean's Rescue Department of our Foundation, who also trained a large number of the argentine navy's personnel with base in the Submarine and Diving School of Mar del Plata, part of the argentine army, Gendarmerie, Provincial and Federal Police, Firefighter corps, municipal naturekeepers of Mar del Plata, members of the Red Cross, and Lifesaver among others. Last December 2002 he dictated the course to the Lifesavers's Groups who are on duty at Puerto Madryn's beaches and he plans to go on with trainings to the new officials of Prefectura, Argentine Navy, Voluntary Firefighter groups, biology students, sportive SCUBA divers and any other professional and people interested in a duty that allows not only to admire these cetacean species, but also to involve themselves in their welfare. At the end of a rescue you'll gain the satisfaction about trying it, about gaving them a new chance to survive... to see them again swimming in the sea. |
