After
the great unfold on January 11th, we continue on waiting the arrival of more
patches in order to add more metres of freedom and education about the problems
of dolphins in the wild and in captivity. So far we have 977 flags.
Partial view of the unfolded flags,
from the Monument to the welsh woman towards the south. |
At least 110 orcas
(four in Argentina) and many other dolphins died in captivity,
leaving great profits for the aquaria and oceanaria that needs them
to continue with their circus style shows, with the only reason of
entertaining, ironically, humans on their free time. Science
knows that orcas, are a highly social species and that also could
live 50 to 80 years in the wild either if they are males or
females, while in captivity their life span shrinks to 5-10 years.
It means that the 48 orcas that are being still kept captive are
sentenced to death in a short time in the future. |

When the people who
visit aquaria and oceanaria watch the pools where orcas are placed
they suppose that those enclosures are of great proportions, because
they simply compare them with swimming the pools they use in a club or
at home. However they ignore, because aquaria don't tell it,
that orcas live in very large ranges, as for example the orcas I
study at Península Valdés cover areas of the sea larger than
400,000 Km2, 2,000 (two thousands) times the
surface of Buenos Aires, Argentina's national Capital. If we compare
it again with the pools' surfaces were orcas are kept captive, it's like if we
were condemned to live on a floor tile for the rest of our lives.
Each one of us can help to revert this making and change the minds
from those who believe that they have the right to take something
that belows to everyone. |

Those who make profit
with orcas and the official who authorize that kind of activity must
recall that orcas where included on the CITES' Migratory Species
Appendix, therefore they have got a greater protection that they
have had before. |
This
campaign needs only that you could give a bit of your time for writing some
text, and if you wish with some allusive picture over a piece of fabric, material or
canvas of one metre by one metre (3.3 by 3.3 ft.) using only markers or any
other kind of unwashable paint regarding to the need of keeping orcas and
another dolphins in freedom. More details regarding this campaign here.
